Health Hazards in Construction
The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) provides information to workers and employers about various chemical hazards that exist in the workplace, and what protective measures they can take in order to prevent the adverse effects of such hazards.
The Globally Harmonized System of Labeling and Classification of Chemicals (GHS) goes into effect in 2013 and provides a single, uniform set of labels, safety data sheets, and protocols for hazardous materials regardless of their point of origin.
This course gives you a basic understanding of how to deal with hazardous materials in construction and how workers can prevent and protect themselves from hazardous substances on the jobsite.
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
Identify the purpose of the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS).
Identify the purpose and benefits of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
Interpret the labels and symbols used to identify hazardous materials.
Reference a Safety Data Sheet, also known as an SDS and formerly known as a Material Safety Data Sheet, or MSDS, and determine appropriate responses to real-world scenarios.
Identify the physical and health hazards presented by hazardous materials in the workplace.
Identify hazardous materials such as silica, asbestos, methylenedianiline, hexavalent chromium, and lead and where they are commonly found on the jobsite.
Explain the common methods of exposure to hazardous materials.
