Topics Covered

PROGRAM OUTLINEBasic of Job Safety- Arrive at work rested and alert so you can give your full attention to the job.- Alcohol and drug use is prohibited. Violation can result in termination. Let your supervisor know if you are on prescribed medications.Equipment Safety- Before operating any type of equipment, you must be trained and given authorization.- Equipment with moving mechanical parts requires machine guarding.- Only authorized personnel are permitted to remove guarding for repair or maintenance.- Make sure all guards are properly placed before turning on the equipment.- Know the location of all emergency stop buttons and lockout procedures.- Machine operator has the responsibility to clear area before starting the equipment.- Do not leave a machine unattended if it is turned on.- If the equipment is malfunctioning, notify the supervisor immediately.Electrical Safety- Never use electrical tools or equipment near water.- Notify your supervisor of hazards such as damaged electrical switches, plugs, cords, receptacles or tools.- A broken ground prong could result in an injury.- A tool must indicate 'double insulated' and have a third prong or ground plug.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)- Follow company procedures on proper PPE to be worn for a specific job.- Eye protection can be safety glasses, goggles, chemical and face shields.Proper Clothing- Do not wear torn or loose-fitting clothing around machinery.- Put long hair in a net or cap or keep it tied back.- Wear the proper gloves to protect hands from rough or sharp edges.Chemical Safety- Wear proper protective clothing and eye protection when working with chemicals.- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available for reference on each chemical or hazardous material.- Before beginning use of a chemical, check with supervision if you have any questions.Fire Prevention- Aisles, corridors and walkways should have at least a 44-inch clearance.- There should be an 18-inch clearance below sprinkler heads.- Electrical panels, transformers or switchgears must have clear access within 3 feet around them.- Know where fire extinguishers are located and how to operate them.- Know where the exits are located.- Follow the emergency procedure plan for your area. Ladder Safety- Do not use chairs, boxes or makeshift platforms to climb on.- Do not use a broken or defective ladder.- Do not stand on the top two steps of a ladder. This can overextend the center of gravity and the ladder could easily tip over.- Do not jump off ladders or platforms.Slips and Falls- Be careful where you are walking and look out for potential hazards.- Use only authorized walkways and aisles.- Always hold the handrail when using stairs.How to Prevent Back Injuries- Most back injuries are the result of improper lifting.- When lifting, get a good grip, bend your legs and use your leg muscles to lift the load, not your back muscles.- If you can't bend your legs, use one hand to provide additional support for your back or use your legs as a brace for support.- Prevent strains by not stretching when lifting.- Never twist your body when lifting.- Report injuries to your supervisor immediately.Safe Awareness- Safety is good common sense and awareness. Take time for safety.
