The sealing of rotating shafts at the point of entrance to a pressure chamber has for years been accomplished with a stuffing box seal. A serious deficiency of the stuffing box type seal is that it will allow some amount of leakage. With the development and perfection of the mechanical seal, this leakage problem has all but vanished. The module provides an overview of how the different types of mechanical seals operate as well as how individual components of the seal function.
